Mr. World 2014

I am a huge fan of Mister World.  From the time of its inception in 1996, Mister World has given us impeccable winners year in and year out.  Check out its past winners: Tom Nuyens -Belgium 1996; Sandro Finoglio-Venezuela  1998; Ignacio Kliche- Uruguay -2000; Gustavo Gianetti- Brazil -2003; Juan Garcia Postigo -Spain -2007; Kamal Ibrahim - Ireland -2010; and Francisco Escobar- Colombia- 2012.

When Francisco Escobar won two years ago, we didn't see any signs of protest, and the whole world was rejoicing. Francisco was the epitome of what Mr. World is all about- beautiful face, good personality, intellegent  and a good partner of Megan Young and Julia Morley in furthering its projects and charity works.

This year, we really have high hopes that another wholesome Mister World will be selected.  But this year was quite different.  When the announcement of winners was made last Sunday our excitement was doused with cold water when expected frontrunners failed to make the cut and lesser mortals occupied the stage like some kind of coup d'etat.

It is really a heart-breaker to see Philippines John Spainhour and Peru 's Diego Marco Conroy being snubbed by the judges.  How bad can these two be versus the ones in the stage? My friend doesn't want to be rude but he asked the most valid question of the day: "Are they blind ....?"  And how can they miss beautiful hunks like Austria's Phillip Knefz; or Spain's Ignacio Ros?

Argentina's Jose Ferrer Santillan and Italy's Adamo Pasqualon gave unforgettable performaces ... so why did the judges choose to forget them?  Same can be said to Reinaldo Dalcin of Brazil; Jesus Antonio Casanova of Venezuela and Nick Kennett of Australia - all of them reluctant and unhappy clappers. What's wrong with that picture?

It's good the quadro hunks composed of Jose Pablo Minor of Mexico, Valeriu Gutu of Moldova, Demian Overdeijn of Netherlands and Alberto Martinez of Puerto Rico manage to squeeze themselves in a mushrooming lineup of forgettable wannabes. Only Jose Pablo Minor survived the curse when he became second runner up.

The culprit ... a lot of Mr. World watchers said was the ... fast track events, who has really nothing to do with beauty contests such as Mr. World .  Can you imagine extreme sports, multi-media, talent, and styling denying and spoiling the chances of  those mentioned above?  One friend said" What happens if a plain looking NBA player  joins Mr World ...  for sure he will dwarfed and crushed whatever opposition there is even if he has a face only his mother will love?  And he added : "What happens if an average looking  America Got Talent winner joins Mr. World and he showed the whole world he can belt  notes as high as Mount Everest ... for sure he will fast-tracked with ease to the top.

I think the whole world has gotten the message.  In the next Mister World, nobody should be surprise when pageant organizers will be scouting their country's representatives in basketball tournaments, sports events, in the military and even singing competetions. Case in point is Frankie Cena of Canada (no offense meant) who despite his height (which is an abnormality in male pageants) became Canada's representative two years ago what with his outstanding singing talent. .Look where that brought him? He was assured of a semifinalist slot and he was even invited to go back this year as he share centerstage with Megan Young. They will be also looking for a man with a stamina of a rhinoceros. Venezuela even fall prey to that assumption when they selected Jesus Antonio Casanova above others because he was a tested and proven national athlete (he is a swimmer).

Looking for a beautiful man is the thing of the past ... there will be no local beauty contests, and talent managers will focus more on looking for a man who can run and jump the highest or a candidate who can dance and sing the sweetest.

But what kind of winners shall we have if we don't see faces in the mold of Francisco Escobar or Juan Garcia Postigo?  Mr. World 2014 has lots of these beautiful faces, but the fast track events derailed their quests and it became a thorn in their path that relegated them as mere sidelights instead of highlights.

We believe Mister World should start rethinking about their policies.  After all Mister World is still a male beauty contest, hence facial beauty, a good personality  and a good body ranks supreme.  If a candidate excels in sports, by all means give him Mr. Sports Award; if a delegate eats fire and walks the tightrope; Mr. Talent Award is in order. And what's this Multimedia and Stylish Award nonsense?  Fastracking a candidate because of these 4 categories limits the chances of the frontrunners.and if this happen year after year, people will get tired of it and will think that Mr. World is a sports and a talent show  That's what happened this year, if you still don't know!

Let's go back to the old Miss and Mr. World. We want them to go back to where they have started. We'd rather see beautiful and handsome candidates winning  instead of  plain looking Joes who could have shown their talents in another venue.
